Areas of concentration are offered on an individualized basis only. Students are required to submit a rationale outlining learning goals and the intended purposes for the degree, and they design their own program of study of 12 courses (4 credits each) based upon completing a comparative analysis of doctoral programs available from other universities in their disciplines. A cross disciplinary course, Research Design and Analysis, may also be required. Doctoral programs in addition to those listed above may be designed from other university programs. Applicants who have already met all doctoral coursework requirements upon enrollment may only be required to complete a dissertation.
All Doctoral programs are designed and allowed to be completed in a minimum of nine months up to two years. (See Time Requirements section, page 18). They comprise a total of 60 credits, which include the following requirements:
Twelve (12) courses in the field of study - 48 credits Dissertation - 12 credits
Courses requirements can be met in the following ways:
Transfer credit from previous institutions Seminars/workshops/short courses.
Your program of study with American Century University will consist of those courses not waived by one or more of the above criteria. Instructions and guidelines are further explained within the Student Program Manual that will be received post-enrollment.
Doctoral programs are conducted in five phases:
Phase 1: Develop program rationale; outline a comparative analysis of similar doctoral programs at three other universities Phase 2: Develop study plan with faculty advisor and complete course reports Phase 3: Submit dissertation proposal Phase 4: Research and write dissertation and defend dissertation Phase 5: Graduation
